italk and Quit4Life team up to provide brand new ‘Cope without Smoke’ workshops, for people who want to quit smoking and improve their mental health.
italk, Hampshire’s largest Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service, has teamed up with Quit4Life, Hampshire’s stop smoking service, to provide free workshops for people who want to stop smoking.
Called Cope without Smoke, the FREE 6-week workshops will start in Gosport and Wecock Farm (Leigh Park) on 19 and 20 March.
With smoking rates among adults with depression about twice as high as adults without, the workshop will aim to address peoples smoking habit whilst also introducing techniques to improve their mental wellbeing. This will include looking at ways to improve sleep, a common issue with smokers, and relaxation techniques to address withdrawal symptoms.
Research has shown that, instead of helping people to relax, smoking actually increases anxiety and tension. Tackling both at the same time, the services aim to use each other’s expertise to improve outcomes for those who want to quit.
As part of the weekly support, Quit4Life will offer clients a choice of medications to help with quitting, including nicotine replacement therapy or a one-off voucher for a vaping starter kit.
Caroline from Gosport used the service to help her stop smoking, saying, “I feel better physically and emotionally.” She went on to say “I recognised the difficult times and dealt with it in a different way. I have tried to quit many times in the past on my own, using different products, but this time I did not use any products – I had the help of someone to talk to.”
The Gosport Workshop will start on 19 March with the Wecock Farm workshop staring on the 20 March. To book a spot visit www.italk.org.uk. You can also call Quit4Life on 01252 335 120.
